30% by '30 Starch Flour Initiative

In 2020, like-minded groups and non-profit organizations came together to move the needle forward in food security in the name of starch crop flour grown and made in Hawaii.

What is starch crop flour? 'Ulu (breadfruit), Kalo (taro), 'Uala (sweet potato) or Niu (coconut) from plant-based starch crops also referred to as the "canoe plants" that were brought in the Polynesian open-ocean canoes throughout the Polynesian triangle. These plants are regenerative and offer multiple uses such as for medicine, food and housing.

We received a grant from The Atherton Foundation to research and develop 'ulu flour production to include production and recipes.

Five years later we have surpassed production goals, adoption and useability. Now, we are increasing access and availability and need everyone's kokua (help and cooperation) to share in the vision.

Join our mission to promote and facilitate efforts to supply 30% of Hawaiʻi's flour consumption with local starches by 2030.

So far we have seen:

  •  an increase in 'ulu flour production to over 30% of the 'Ulu Cooperative's harvests dedicated to 'ulu flour production.
  • 30 different companies across Hawaii (and beyond) producing 'ulu and kalo based food products (list with links to come soon)
  • 'ulu flour on the menu of the Hawaii Department of Education's menu
  • 'ulu and kalo flour flagship micro-milling site in Waimanalo
  • canoe plant flour workshop (s)
  • cottage food law passed which supports home-based dehydrated foods
